We aim to empower & enrich children’s lives in Watamu Kenya through the provision of libraries and free access to books.
HOW WE STARTED
Watamu, on the east coast of Kenya, is a beautiful area with a wonderful community that makes it an idyllic tourist destination. Walk along the long white sands enjoying a cooling breeze, swim, snorkel in the warm Indian Ocean, watch whales and dolphins, visit the coral gardens and get to know the wonderful people; it all makes for an amazing unforgettable holiday experience.
But, although there is always a smile on their faces, the daily life of local Kenyans is a constant struggle against poverty.
Education is not free and most schools lack basic resources such as tables, chairs and books. Ancillary costs of uniforms, meals, shoes etc. plus medical fees must be found from an irregular income of less than £2 a day for those fortunate enough to be working.
THE QUESTION How could we help a community of disadvantaged children? -
THE SOLUTION Provide a safe environment, free, with books, paper and volunteers to help children read and write and explore their natural talents.
KWEST WAS BORN
Our KWEST was to open a free children's library.
